Samuel Mockbee once said: “Everybody wants, rich or poor, not only a warm dry room, but a shelter for the soul.” This project is designed to support the isolated, the underprivileged, and the marginalized in urban communities.
A rising stair behind the entrance will take the person away from the crowd. The visitor will set foot on the soft steps, pass through layers of light curtains which gently sweep across the skin, and arrive at his or her internal world, the most tender corner, where they can feel safe to cry.
This concept was brought to life through a series of hanging curtains ascending the staircase. The gradient colors lead visitors to step into tranquility upon entry, and to experience a serene beam of light towards the exit. The palette transitions from warm wooden tones to pure blues, creating a journey for people to walk away from the bustling city to an intimate inner retreat.
